Following years of development, operaSHOP is Opera Cabal's newest initiative, a vehicle dedicated to the radical critique of opera in the 21st century.
Since the fall of 2011, the operaSHOP series spotlights teams of exceptional artists with a history of working together in fields traditionally unrelated to opera. Under the guidance of Opera Cabal, each team embarks on a one-month residency, bringing their unique strengths to bear in the creation of a new and compelling work for the stage. Past collaborators include Alexander Overington & Teddy Rankin-Parker (fall 2011), Elliot Cole & Caroline Shaw (winter 2012), and Phyllis Chen & Robert Dietz (fall 2012). Opera Cabal is thrilled to partner in this endeavor with High Concept Laboratories, an arts co-producing organization that serves as operaSHOP residency partner by coordinating artist incubation and workshop presentation of the new work.
The next operaSHOP (fall 2013) features Elliot Cole, a Princeton University performer & composer, Doug and Brad Balliet, NYC-based performers of new music (double bass/bassoon), and Majel Connery (vocals). The project, a concept-album called Hecuba, seeks to recast and reanimate the notion of the concept album in operatic form, exploring the 21st-century rapprochement between opera as a live event and as an edited product.
